Lively, intelligent and very energetic, the German Wire-haired Pointer is a good breed for more experienced dog owners. While they are also suited to first time dog owners, the German Wire-haired Pointer needs a great deal of exercise, and stimulation, which means that this breed is best suited to very dedicated dog owners.


The German Wire-haired Pointer was first bred in the 1800s in Germany. This breed was created by breeding the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Pudelpointer, Stichelhaar, and Deutscher-Kurzhaar. Breeders wanted to create the perfect hunting and retrieving dog, which would be energetic, loyal, intelligent, and able to hunt, even on difficult terrain. By the 20th Century, the German Wire-haired Pointer had become a very popular gun dog in Germany.


The German Wire-haired Pointer is a medium size dog, which is fairly muscular. It has a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. The average male German Wire-haired Pointer is 24 to 27 inches tall and weighs between 27 to 32 kilograms. The average female is 22 to 25 inches tall and weighs 27 to 32 kilograms. This breed has an average lifespan of between ten to twelve years.

The German Wire-haired Pointer has a wiry coat, which repels water and is weather-resistant. This breed features a double coat. Its undercoat is very dense during the wintertime, but during the summer time it is much thinner. The outercoat is harsh and wiry, and it lays flat. The dog features a distinctive beard.


Intelligent, confident and energetic, the German Wire-haired Pointer is a very spirited dog breed. They have a strong personality and they can be very wilful. It is a highly intelligent dog breed, with a very determined personality. This dog loves to work and learn things from their owners. If the German Wire-haired Pointer is not kept active and occupied, it can become bored easily. This means that this breed needs lots of attention from its owners. A very loyal dog, the German Wire-haired Pointer loves its owners, but isn’t as friendly with strangers. Like with all dog breeds, the German Wire-haired Pointer needs proper socialization and plenty of attention and exercise to become a well-rounded dog.


In the past, the German Wire-haired Pointer was used as a gun dog, and for retrieving prey. This dog can track, point and retrieve game and other prey exceedingly well, on a wide variety of terrains. This breed is now also popular as a pet for individuals and families with children.


The German Wire-haired Pointer is a very energetic dog, which has a strong desire to roam. This breed needs a great deal of exercise, play and mental stimulation, or they will become bored and frustrated. You need to take this breed on a vigorous walk every day. You can take them on a bicycle ride with you, or a jog. They also love the water, and playing fetch. Unless you can provide this dog with frequent, vigorous exercise, this breed is not ideal.


As the German Wire-haired Pointer dog is intelligent and very eager to learn, it responds well to training. Consistent, positive training methods are best used.

Loyal, intelligent, energetic and determined, the German Wire-haired Pointer is wonderful dog breed. If you are able to take the German Wire-haired Pointer on lots of walks, provide them with affection and keep it occupied, then this is an ideal breed for you.
